Madhubani Paintings- A Living Language of Perception, Meaning, and Expression
 |

Madhubani, or Mithila, painting comes from the Madhubani district in the northern Indian state of Bihar. It is an art form that has traditionally been practised by Hindu women, who would paint the walls and floors of their houses before major festivals or family celebrations.
The word Madhubani translates into English as ‘Forest of Honey’. This luxurious, suggestive, and slightly magical phrase seems a perfect description of Madhubani painting. The images are visually striking, painted in bright colours with detailed patterning. The works often have religious subjects, telling the stories of Hindu deities. These stories are then filled out on the wall with brightly-coloured trees, flowers, birds and abstract patterns.
