The eight-thousanders or also popularly called ‘The Death Zones’ are the 14 independent mountains that stand at a towering altitude of more than 8000 meters above sea level. All these mountains are categorically located only in the Himalayan and Karakoram Ranges of India, China, Nepal, and Pakistan, or proud to say – in the Asian continent. These mountains are called death zones because it is very well known that the oxygen level in the atmosphere around these mountains is insufficient. But still, mountaineers climb these massive peaks with the help of supplementary oxygen and medical aid just to fulfil their aching desire of conquering something greater and meaningful in life.
An Italian mountaineer – Reinhold Messner was the first to make a climb on all these 14 mountain tops in the year, 1986. More recently on 29th Oct 2019, a former member of the Nepalese Special Boat Service (SBS) – Nirmal Purja, also conquered victory on these 14 mountains and within a time span of 6 months and 6 days. And as the difficulty level put in information by these 44 climbers, it can be summarized that these mountains are alpine-style climbing expeditions filled with very rough terrains and heavily snow-covered paths but the view has been described as something inexplicable to word.
All the aspiring mountaineers wishing to climb these towering mountains need to follow the general advisory as put forth by the Mountaineering Foundation of different countries. They need to heavily train themselves for not months but several years for such expeditions and also learn the use of different technical mountaineering knowledge that comes in handy during the climb. Like how to jump through ropes, how to use ice axes on snow-covered regions, how to handle jumars, crampons, and gaiters during the steep paths. And apart from this, a well-known trekking team will lastly be your best choice to make you aware of other technical terms used during the expedition.
