Overview
Gran Paradiso (4,061 m) is the highest mountain located entirely within Italy and one of the most popular alpine peaks for climbers attempting their first 4,000-meter summit in the Alps. Situated inside the beautiful Gran Paradiso National Park, the mountain offers stunning alpine scenery, glaciers, and dramatic views of the surrounding peaks.
The climb is considered one of the most achievable 4,000-meter peaks in Europe, making it an excellent objective for climbers preparing for bigger mountains like Mont Blanc or the Matterhorn. Although the ascent is not highly technical, it still requires good physical fitness, basic mountaineering skills, and the ability to travel safely on glaciers.
The expedition typically begins from the charming alpine village of Pont in the Valsavarenche Valley. From here, climbers trek to the Rifugio Chabod or Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II, which serve as base huts for the summit climb.
The final summit push involves glacier travel, snow slopes, and a short rocky ridge that leads to the iconic Madonna statue at the summit, a symbolic landmark of Gran Paradiso.
