Overview

The annual mask-dance festival takes place in the month of June/July at the Hemis monastery about 40kms away from Leh. Hemis is the biggest and the most important monastery in Ladakh, built in the 17th century by Chapgon Gyalshas and ever since has enjoyed the patronage of the royal family. The Monastery holds a 2 day celebration to commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava who is known to be a reincarnation of Buddha. This masked parade is one of the most sacred rituals here and complete Buddhist cultural extravaganza. Drums, cymbals and long horns fill the valley’s of Leh with the sound of victory of good over evil by performing these masked dances.

Hemis Festival & Monasteries of Ladakh 2024 itinerary

Day 01: Arrive Leh

After reaching Leh airport (on your own), you will be greeted by our representative and transferred to the hotel for check-in. Spend the day in the hotel for rest and acclimatization.

The valley of Leh-Ladakh is beautiful beyond description, a desert land with snow capped mountains, popular with both tourist, hikers, bikers and adventurers.

Leh at 3505m is the principal town of Ladakh and was once a meeting place of the ancient trade caravans traversing the high routes into the legendary Central Asian bazaars of Yarkhand, Kashgar and Kotan. Leh is like a delightful green Oasis amidst a landscape of grey, mud brown monotonous slopes and is today a popular destination and the strategic point from where most treks and other tours begin. It has restaurants serving Indian and European cuisine beside the traditional meal - a bowl of boiled noodles topped with a meat broth washed down with salted butter tea. Hotels range from budget to Luxury and offer surprisingly modern facilities.

Day 03: Leh - Lamayuru - Alchi

Morning drive to Lamayuru ( Approx. 110 Kms/ 4 hrs drive) enroute see the Magnetic Hill

Magnetic Hill: A law of gravity defying phenomenon. This stretch of hills is at a short distance from Gurdwara Shri Patthar Sahib. It has been noticed that when a vehicle is parked on neutral gear on this metallic road the vehicle slides up-hill although some believe it’s only an optical illusion.

Lamayuru or Yuru Gompa is a Tibetan Buddhist Gompa (monastery) in Kargil District, Western Ladakh, India.

Mahasiddhacarya Naropa (956-1041 CE), allegedly caused a lake which filled the valley to dry up and founded Lamayuru Monastery. The oldest surviving building at Lamayuru is a temple called Seng-ge-sgang, at the southern end of the Lamayuru rock, which is attributed to the famous builder-monk Rinchen Zangpo (958-1055 CE). Rinchen Zangpo was charged by the king of Ladakh to build 108 gompas, and certainly many gompas in Ladakh, Spiti and the surrounding regions, date from his time.

Afternoon drive to Alchi ( Approx. 60 Kms/ 2 hrs drive). Upon arrival check in at hotel.

Later visit Alchi Gompa: 70 Kms from Leh, on the banks of the Indus, is the Alchi Gompa dating a thousand years back. One of its walls features thousands of miniature sized pictures of the Buddha. Three large sized images made of clay and painted brightly are its focal attractions. No longer an active religious center, it is looked after by monks from the Liker monastery. This is the only monastery amongst 34 monasteries, which is not located on a hilltop.

The present Gompa dates back to the 18th century. Skilled craftsmen producing excellent Thankas, earthen pots and carved wooden folding stools, live here in the village. Majestically situated, Likir commands a spectacular view of the surrounding area. A magnificent giant Jupiter tree, one of the few survivors of its species, stands in the courtyard.
