Overview

Popularly celebrated as a beautiful corridor that overlooks some of the famous peaks of the world like Mt. Everest and Kanchenjunga – Sandakphu is one of the mesmerizing journeys walked by thousands of travelers every year. Bearing a resemblance to the statue of the Sleeping Buddha, the towering mountain stands at an altitude of 11,930 ft above sea level in the state of West Bengal. The peak also lies on the border between India and Nepal and that’s what makes it special for many mountaineers looking for a chance to get any close to Nepal.

Sandakphu trek is an easy level trekking journey so, you may not need any prior technical mountaineering knowledge to climb up this mountain. You may need to be physically and mentally fit to climb such a journey because any climbing journey included walking towards a higher altitude and that can be dangerous for those who are not well-prepared.

Sandakphu Trek 2024 itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Darjeeling

Upon your arrival at Darjeeling Bus Stand, you will be warmly received by the representative of Shikhar Travels who will then leads you towards your hotel room in Darjeeling. After checking in your hotel room in Darjeeling, you will join our team for a quick briefing session where your trekking essentials will be checked and you will be taught about some necessary skills used during the trekking journey.

Afterward, you can either take a rest or go for a short evening trip to the famous places of Darjeeling. You can hop a cable car ride – here, you can witness the multitudes of landscapes from gorgeous snow-capped mountain ranges to charming valleys, Nightingale Park – You can go for a walk through the Nightingale Park which harbors a giant statue of Lord Shiva, Main Market – to shop for souvenirs.

Day 02: Darjeeling – Manebhanjan – Tumling: 95km Drive and 11km Trek

Once you get finished with breakfast early in the morning, you will hop on a traveler bus and proceed towards Manebhanjan which is about 95km away from Darjeeling. Relax down, hold up your legs onto your seat because you still have to ride for about 1-1.5 hours for this journey. But, for Manebhanjan, you will follow a journey driving on the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas and gradually, gain height. For the last 2km of the journey, you will ride on a steep path with several hairpin bends so, you will sure to remember this mesmerizing journey.

After reaching Manebhanjan, you will first eat your packed lunch and then, carry the trekking equipment on your back and starts your trekking journey. Now, you will walk towards Tumling which is another spectacular peak in the Singalila Range. Since the region from here lies between the border of India and Nepal, so you may find the SSB soldier guarding their posts every few km.

Upon reaching Tumling, you will set up your tents and relax for the night.

Day 03: Tumling – Kalipokhri: 12km

Once you get finished with your breakfast, you will get ready to proceed towards Kalapokhri which is about 12km away from here. Today, you will have to cover a long distance on a steep path so, better be early with your breakfast. For Kalapokhri, you will also get a chance to pass through Singalila National Park and it will be a great chance to explore the well-preserved beauty of wildlife here.

After taking some time to explore the Singalila National Park, the road will then make you walk into a thick-dense forest area that sometimes meets the jeep-driven path. Because you are trekking for this summit during winter, you may not be able to see the vibrant beauty of Rhododendron and Magnolia which blooms in spring. During the last few miles, you will see a small pond filled with black water and often locally called – Kalapokhri. In an open area near this lake, you will set up your camps and relax for the night.

Day 04: Kalapokhri – Sandakphu Summit: 8km

Once you get finished with your breakfast early in the morning, you will once again harness your trekking essentials on your back but walk towards the summit today. You will be walking inside Nepal area for this trail so, be sure to cherish every moment of it. You may find several tea stalls up to some km during this trail so, you can take as many stopovers as you want to refresh yourself up.

After a few kilometers of the leveled path, you will then walk on a steep path and climb up to Sandakphu summit and can rejoin others in your victory of this summit. From the top of Sandakphu, you will also get a chance to watch the shimmering panoramic view of Mt. Everest and Kanchenjunga peak. You will spend your overnight stay in a lodge or homestay here at the Sandakphu top.

Day 05: Sandakphu – Gurdum: 18km

After cherishing every sweet moment of your victory to the Sandakphu peak, you will first finish your breakfast and then, get ready to descend towards Darjeeling to complete this whole adventure. But before descending back to the original city, be sure to look straight ahead of yourself and watch Kanchenjunga massif along with Kumbhakarna on the left and Pandim on the right. Together these three forms the sculpture of Sleeping Buddha and have been regarded as the famous part of this expedition.

After this, you will descend back to Gurdum on a slightly leveled path and set up your tents upon reaching here and retiring for the night.

Day 06: Gurdum – Rimbik: 11km

Once you get finished with your breakfast, you will descend back to the Srikhola river which is about 10 km away from Gurdum. The trail now lies inside India and you may not have to worry much because the trek down to this place is an easy level trekking journey. Upon reaching the Srikhola River, you will first settle on a rock to calmly watch the water flow and eat your packed lunch before walking towards Rimbik which is still 1 km away from here.

Upon reaching Rimbik, you will get settled in your Lodge rooms and after having dinner, you can retire for the night.

Day 07: Rimbik – Darjeeling: 60km Drive

Once you get finished with your breakfast, you will hop on a traveler bus and be ready to leave for Darjeeling today. Darjeeling is about 60 km away from Rimbik and the trail follows one of those mesmerizing journeys alongside the Himalayan region.

Upon reaching Darjeeling, you will check in to your hotel room with a Govt. Id and settle for the night.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 08: Departure from Darjeeling

Once you get finished with your breakfast, you will pack your bags and meet the representative at the reception area. He will then, drop you at the Darjeeling Bus Stand from where you can catch a bus to Bagdogra Airport and be wished for more journeys with us.
