Overview

The Yamunotri Gangotri Do Dham Yatra is a spiritual pilgrimage to two of the four sacred shrines in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, known as the Char Dhams. The two shrines are Yamunotri and Gangotri, dedicated to the Hindu deities Yamuna and Ganga, respectively. The pilgrimage typically involves visiting these two shrines, as well as other nearby spiritual sites, and can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to complete.

The holy site of Yamunotri, the origin of the river Yamuna, is the westernmost temple in the Garhwal Himalayas. The shrine stands proudly at the top of a border of Bandarpoonch Parvat. The major attraction of Yamunotri is the temple of the goddess Yamuna and the sacred thermal springs at Jankichatti. The actual origin is a frozen lake of ice, Champasar glacier (often referred to as Yamunotri glacier), located on the Kalind Mountain at an altitude of 4421 meters above sea level, about km further up and is not generally visited as it is not accessible. Thus the shrine has been positioned on the base of the hill. It is very tough to approach the actual source, so pilgrims offer Pooja at the temple itself. The statue of the goddess Yamuna is made of beautiful black marble. Like Ganga, the Yamuna has the status of the divine mother for the Hindus and has been held responsible for nurturing and developing the Indian civilization.

Situated at an elevation of 3048 meters above sea level, Gangotri is one of the holy cities in the Uttarakhand state of India. Gangotri is one of the Char Dham of Uttarakhand, located on the banks of the sacred Bhagirathi River. There is a natural rock Shivling in Gangotri plunged underwater, which can be seen clearly during winters as the water level decreases during that time. There is a legend that this was the spot where Lord Shiva was sitting when he received Ganga in his tangled locks. Gangotri is the highest temple of Goddess Ganga and also one of the significant temples of Hindus. Amar Singh Thapa, Gorkha General, built the current temple of Gangotri in the early 18th century. The source of Bhagirathi River, Gaumukh glacier is 18kms from Gangotri, and one can only reach Gaumukh glacier on foot.

Yamunotri: Temple of goddess Yamuna is one of the most famous temples for Hindus. Nearby the temple, there are several hot water springs where the water flows out of the mountain cracks at the boiling point. Surya Kund is the main Kund. A pinch of rice or potatoes is tied loosely in a cloth and dip it in water; after a few minutes, it gets perfectly cooked. Visitors take these home as Prasad. Divya Shila is worshipped before worshipping goddess Yamuna, Divya Shila lies near the Surya Kund.

Gangotri: The major highlight of Gangotri is the Temple of Bhagirathi. In this temple, you will see the idols of Goddess Ganga, Yamuna, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Parvati, and Annapurna. There is also a thick forest of deodar. The temple of Ganga lies on the right bank of the Bhagirathi (Ganga), and we can see its route in various moods deep and silent in the lower plains. However, at Gangotri, Bhagirathi is stirring, burbling, foaming, and singing an ecstatic air.

Otherwise, we will move continuously without stopping, and we can reach within six hours. Mostly, during peak season, there will be a massive rush in Mussoorie, so sometimes we divert the way to Barkot via Vikas Nagar. If we need to redirect the way, we should leave sightseeing around Kempty falls while returning. On our way, we will be visiting places such as Satya Narayan Temple in Haridwar, Prakasheshwar temple in Dehradun, and Kempty fall in Mussoorie. After reaching Barkot, we will check into the hotel, have dinner, and retire for the night.

Taking vehicles helps to reduce the distance to walk by about 8km. If you take the automobile, you will be trekking from Janki Chatti. You need to travel for 6km from here to reach Yamunotri. You will also have the choice of taking a horse or Doli. However, you need to do it on your own expense. Also, you can take a bath in the natural warm water of Jamunabai Kund; you can offer prayer near the temple to Divya Shila. Then, you can move to the temple of Goddess Yamuna and offer your prayers before returning to Barkot. After offering prayers and enjoying the surrounding view, we trek back to Janki Chatti. This natural rock Shivling is the spot where, according to mythology, Lord Shiva sat when he received Ganga in his tangled lock. The stone is most visible during winter months when the water level decreases. There is another legend that Pandavas performed the great Deva Yagna here to atone their sins of killing their kin in the massive battle of Mahabharata. There is a belief that Raibhya Rishi did hard penance here, and the god named Rishikesh appeared, henceforth the name came to be known as Rishikesh. Upon arriving at Rishikesh, we will visit Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula on foot, as the vehicle won’t reach these places. The car will be waiting for you in the parking area. It is ideal for visiting this part of Rishikesh is by entering through Laxman Jhula and exiting from Ram Jhula. Likewise, you can see several Ghats, temples, and beautiful ashrams.
