Overview

The journey to Yamunotri Dham usually starts from the town of Janki Chatti, which is around 200 km from Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. From Janki Chatti, the devotees have to trek for around 6 km to reach the Yamunotri temple, which is situated at an altitude of 3,293 meters above sea level.

The trekking trail is scenic and passes through beautiful valleys, gushing streams, and dense forests. The trek can be completed on foot, by riding a pony or a palanquin. The trek is generally considered to be moderate in difficulty, and it takes around 4-5 hours to reach the temple.

At the Yamunotri temple, devotees worship the Goddess Yamuna, who is believed to be the daughter of the Sun God, Surya. The temple is an ancient structure that was built in the 19th century and is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River.

Apart from the temple, there are several natural hot water springs in the region that are considered to have medicinal properties. Pilgrims often take a dip in these hot springs before visiting the temple as it is believed to purify the body and soul.
